Santa Anonymous Summer Camp Grants 2011

The Santa Anonymous Summer Camp Grants program of The Minneapolis Foundation provides opportunities for young people to attend a summer camp or activity. It awards up to $5,000 to nonprofit organizations that conduct their own program or award “camp scholarships.” All grantees serve young people, ages 5 to 17, from low-income households in the seven-county Twin Cities area and are located in Minnesota.

The program began with a gift to the Foundation in 1930 from a man named Walter Boutell. Many children who benefit have never left the city, let alone their neighborhood, and few of these kids would otherwise have this opportunity. Most of these camps didn’t even exist in 1930, yet Mr. Boutell has been able to provide for the changing needs of our community’s youth and make a difference in their lives year after year.

$136,000 was awarded in April 2011 to the following summer programs:

Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association of Minnesota
A camp for those with food allergies.

Asian Media Access
A camp for North Minneapolis Neighborhoods' youth of color to utilize multi-media tools to increase their job readiness skills and voice out their concerns.

Baby's Space/Tatanka Academy
Native American youth can enjoy less rigor and more fun activities while still maintaining strong academic and social/emotional success during the summer months at Tatanka Academy.

Centro Cultural Chicano, Inc.
A camp for Immigrant Latino teens.

East Side Neighborhood Services
An affordable camp with a sliding fee scale for boys and girls ages 8-14.


Emerge Community Development

A day camp for K-8th grade youth that were formerly homeless.
A camp providing valuable educational support, life skills training, and out-of-school opportunities for youth most at-risk of academic failure and involvement in the juvenile justice system.

A camp for the COOL Youth Center summer program.

Kaleidoscope Place
A camp called Summer Kids enrolls 100 kids with a focus on academic skills, art and trips to the community garden.


KFAI, Fresh Air Radio, Inc
At risk youth of color will receive hands-on learning at this camp, where civic engagement and minority media representation are major goals of the program.

MacPhail Center for Music
MacPhail offers a variety of summer camps for youth with varying abilities and socio-economic means.

For the African Girls Initiative for Leadership and Empowerment 2011.

Minnesota 4-H Foundation
This is a camp intentionally bringing together youth from diverse backgrounds to provide an authentic cultural immersion experience.

MN Sunshine Dance
Low-income Hmong youth will receive classical dance training, build self-esteem through cultural pride, and enjoy recreational summer activities at this camp.


Neighborhood House
Summer in the City is a camp incorporating physical fitness, proper nutrition, the arts, and social, reading and science skills for low income children in grades 1-5.

Neighborhood Involvement Program
American Team Fitness Minneapolis program encourages physical activity, nutrition and healthy choices for youth ages 6-14. 

 

People Serving People
This campership allows children facing the challenges of homelessness, poverty and racism to attend Camp Heartland.

Dream of Wild Health is a community building project that provides resources for healing and illness prevention based on holistic Native American practices.

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center
Youth from lower income families that are engaged in the Dream, Explore, Connect! program can experience a canoeing expedition led by Wilderness Inquiry.

Youth can enjoy Day Camp, Overnight Camp, and PUC's Summer Camps.

For camps that benefit youth through education, cultural arts, and human services.

For City Explorers and SEED Camps.

For a Summer Camping Adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Sabathani Community Center
A summer program for youth that takes a holistic approach to education.

Springbrook Nature Center Foundation

A camp providing disadvantaged students the opportunity to experience natural science concepts, live animals and the great outdoors. 

For Summer Cool Off Days 2011 that serves youth in the East Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis.

The Link
A camp for teenage girls who are at risk of school and behavioral support, chronically truant, or involved with gangs experience the Boundary Waters Canoe Area with case managers.

Tubman
This "Peace Camp" is a day activity program for shelter children serving over 100 children over the course of the summer. 

Urban Arts Academy

Fun themed art camps; from Spanish Camp to Robotics, to Fantasty Art and Circus Camp, youth can enjoy a variety of fun at these summer programs.

Wilderness Inquiry
A camp spent on the Mississippi River for low-income Minneapolis youth.

YouthCARE

This is a camp for Minneapolis and St. Paul youth, ages 13-18 that will spend one week at Camp Sunrise in the wilderness and have a multicultural leadership experience.

For predominantly Hmong youth, this 8-Week Summer Day Camp promotes team building and self-esteem through fun and meaningful activities.

 

Services for Blind and Visually Impaired Minnesotans - recent awards April 2011

In 2011, The Minneapolis Foundation awarded $69,000 in funding to community programs and agencies that offer services for blind and visually impaired Minnesota residents. Grants were awarded from the Gladys M. Smith Fund, created in 1970 "to further the training, recreation, and general welfare of the blind," and the Jane McCarthy Fund, established in 1980 "for aid to, education of, and help to the blind."

Blindness: Learning in New Dimensions
The Buddy Program, which teaches the skills of blindness to children and youth, ages 9 to 13.
