Giving Kids an Early Start

Early childhood education provides the crucial bridge to success in K-12 education. The Minneapolis Foundation gave funding to Joyce Preschool to prepare children from diverse backgrounds for success in school and lifelong learning through quality early childhood education and family support in a dual immersion setting.

Making Play a Part of Every Child's Life

Urban Arts Academy, which offers free and low -cost arts education for Minneapolis children, received a grant from the Foundation’s Santa Anonymous Fund. The Fund offers “camperships” to help summer programs offer opportunities for children from low-income families to participate.

A Safe Space

Gay teens are “coming out” earlier than ever, but still face bullying and rejection by friends and family members that can lead to depression, homelessness and suicide. Milo Pinkerton and his partner Virgil Taus support District 202, which offers GLBT youth and their allies a safe environment to communicate and seek services.

Promoting safety... two wheels at a time

Bike Cops for Kids builds positive relationships between police and young people in North Minneapolis while helping kids stay safe and healthy. Donor Emily Maltz supported the program through her fund at the Foundation, helping the officers hand out more bike helmets and make more personal connections.

  • More than 1.2 million children, age birth to 17, live in Minnesota.

  • According to one study, every dollar invested in mentorship programs returns almost two dollars in public cost savings and increased tax revenue.

  • According to another study, children who participated in preschool programs went on to earn, on average, $20,000 more annually than their peers.

  • The Minneapolis Foundation's donor advised funds contributed more than $3.4 million to organizations working with children and youth last year.

  • 11% of children in Minnesota are living in poverty.
