Give Tomorrow: Planned Giving Options

You can create a customized estate plan or select from a variety of planned gift types. For information on any of these options, please call Mary Ellis Peterson, Gift Planning Officer, at (612) 672-3859, or e-mail development@mplsfoundation.org.

Bequests
Specify a bequest in your will or revocable trust. You retain all assets during your lifetime, and the gift will be made upon your death. Your estate will receive an estate tax deduction for your bequest.

Legacy Funds
Support the causes you care about well beyond your lifetime. Your gifts will be pooled with those of other generous donors to make a greater impact in an area of particular interest to you or your family. The Minneapolis Foundation will steward those gifts to ensure they are continually put to effective use in accordance with the established fund priorities and to meet changing needs.
Designated Beneficiary Funds
Name a fund as either the primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement assets. This is especially appropriate for retirement assets since a charitable fund, unlike individual inheritors, is not taxed upon receiving the assets.

Beneficiary Designations
A simple way to make a gift at your death without the need for probate or trust administration. For some types of assets, you can use a simple form to request payment at your death to one or more individuals or charities. The assets pass automatically to the designated beneficiary as soon as an application and proper documentation are submitted.

Charitable Remainder Trust
You can create a Charitable Remainder Trust with $100,000 or more, and receive an immediate tax deduction. Receive income from your gift for life or for a specific number of years, after which your fund receives the remaining assets.

Charitable Lead Trust
A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to provide income to a designated charitable fund for a period of years. Direct the remaining -- often appreciated -- assets to you or your beneficiaries at the end of a specific term. A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to pass assets on to your children or grandchildren with minimum gift and estate tax liability.
Charitable Gift Annuities

In exchange for a charitable gift of $5,000 or more, you'll receive a fixed stream of income for your lifetime (or the lifetimes of up to two people), backed by the unrestricted assets of The Minneapolis Foundation. Part of the annuity payments may even be tax-free.

Gifts of Real Estate
Give real estate outright to create a fund or reserve the right to live in your home for as long as you live. If the gift is irrevocable, you may take an immediate charitable deduction for the present value of the remainder interest.
