What does it mean to give through The Minneapolis Foundation?

By giving through us, you join generations of Minnesotans committed to making a difference through their philanthropy.
  • Since 1915, families, individuals, and businesses have entrusted The Minneapolis Foundation with their charitable gifts and grants. While their interests vary, donors find great value in the stewardship, personal attention, and financial benefits we offer.
  • We work with you and your professional advisors to create a customized giving strategy tailored to your assets and your interests.
  • We're your neighbors. As a community foundation, we build, invest, and distribute an endowment dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community. We also engage the community in addressing issues of shared concern through advocacy, program initiatives, and public information activities.
No matter what causes or charities you support, we can help you make a difference.

What We Offer

We understand both the personal and financial dimensions of giving. Our donors tell us they value:
  • Our connection to the community;
  • Decades of proven and effective stewardship;
  • Our exclusive commitment to philanthropy; and
  • Our ability to help them make a bigger impact with less paperwork and better tax advantages.

At The Minneapolis Foundation you get competitive investment returns, along with expert advice and personal attention -- all from a local partner committed to the community. The Minneapolis Foundation’s financial performance for the funds it manages is consistently in the top 25 percent of foundations nationally.

We offer a broad array of funds and giving strategies. We’ll help you design a giving strategy that is tailored to your situation. You can rely on our professional, expert charitable gift planning services to set up a fund using cash, stock or illiquid assets.

We provide expertise -- combined with experience. Tap into our connections in the community --through issue research, evaluation and tailored philanthropic consulting services when you need them.

Put your assets to good work. The Minneapolis Foundation can accept most types of assets and, because we are a public charity, your gifts can usually be deducted at their fair market value. Although most donors contribute cash or appreciated, publicly-traded stock, we are also able to accept*:

  • closely-held stock
  • real estate
  • stock options or founder's stock
  • limited liability partnership units
  • qualified retirement plan assets or IRAs
  • disclaimed inheritance (if provided for in a will or living trust)
  • assets of other trusts or of a private foundation
  • life insurance
  • personal residence (retained life estate)

Assets may be contributed outright, or may be used to establish gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts or other planned gifts.

We’re local. We’ve helped generations of Minnesotans with their giving. Because we’re involved in the issues facing the community, and committed to its future, we are a resource you can trust.

We’re flexible. We’re here to help you when you need us and however you find it most convenient. We’ll work directly with you or in partnership with your professional advisors.

Minnesotans making a difference

Wendy Cox is one of many donors who give internationally through The Minneapolis Foundation.  She reflects, "My husband and I saw how a small loan could transform lives, but our lives, too, were transformed by the realization that we can play a meaningful role in ending global poverty."

Her support of and work with Opportunity International has taken her around the world to meet women who have built thriving businesses from $100 loans.  She shared her expertise with other Foundation donors at an event on microcredit.
