About Andy: Longtime Twin Cities attorney focusing on mergers and acquisitions, now lives in San Diego. Among other causes, his family’s fund at the Minneapolis Foundation supports WE WIN Institute, the Jungle Theater, James Sewell Ballet, and a drop-in center for adults who struggle with independent living at Plymouth Congregational Church.
His family’s giving philosophy: “We like to give gifts that have the potential to be transformative for the organization that receives them. We look for projects that could be justified from a business perspective, and we look carefully at metrics. And we follow Virginia Satir’s maxim: ‘peace within, peace between, peace among’ – in that order.”
Connected with WE WIN because: Titi Bediako, the founder of WE WIN, used to be a teacher in the Minneapolis school district. One of her students was Andy’s son, Nick, who has Down syndrome. “She was terrific,” Andy said. “When she expanded her work to start an organization that empowers young people, we supported her from the outset.” Andy’s first wife, Nancy, who died 18 years ago, became a friend of Titi’s, he added. “Nancy had a fundamental belief that change is made one person at a time, and that it’s done individually. This is the kind of work that Titi does.”
