It's easy

A Donor Advised Fund at The Minneapolis Foundation gives you the greatest giving flexibility and maximum tax benefits without the bother of administrative details. There are no costs to set up your fund and no annual tax returns to prepare.

The Minneapolis Foundation administers more than 600 Donor Advised Funds, managing the investment, due diligence, and grant distribution. Donor Advised grants total more than $20 million each year.

How does it work?

An individual, family, or corporation can establish a fund with an initial gift (minimum $10,000), which is tax deductible to the full amount allowed by law. The Minneapolis Foundation can accept a wide variety of asset types.

The donor then names the fund and identifies individuals ("donor advisors") who can recommend grant distributions to charities from the fund.

The Foundation invests the gift and provides regular reports to the donor about fund balances, investment returns, and gift and grantmaking activity.

As a Donor Advisor, you can recommend grants to any qualifying charity in the U.S. and, in most cases, around the world. Foundation staff perform due diligence on all recommended charities, ensuring financial solvency, proper public registration, etc. so you don't have to.

You can support the causes and charities are most important to you. Foundation staff are also available to assist you and your family or business identify issues, approaches, and organizations that excite you and match your philanthropic goals.

Donor advisors can recommend grants by mail, fax, in person, or on-line. Minimum grant amounts are $250; there is no maximum grant size. There is no annual minimum or maximum for the number or dollars of grants.

You can add to your fund at any time. Foundation staff are able to assist you, along with your professional advisor, in taking advantage of estate planning options to help you meet your charitable and financial goals.

Who is it for?

It's a great way for individuals, families, and businesses to streamline their giving. The minimum fund size is $10,000. Existing funds range from the minimum of $10,000 to several million dollars in size. (At $1 million, donors may be interested in our Signature Fund option.)

Some particularly favorable opportunities include:

When you or your family have an opportunity to set aside, on a tax-favored basis, a portion of your net worth for charitable purposes.

When you are looking for a simple alternative to creating a private family foundation, yet one that can involve your children in the process and the pleasure of giving. (View a comparison of Donor Advised Funds vs. Private Foundations.)

When you want to manage your charitable giving with the help of a knowledgeable foundation partner.

When you want to benefit many charities over time, using an unusual or hard-to-liquidate asset.
