The Minneapolis Foundation recently awarded $2,895,000 in Community Grants to help transform education, promote economic vitality, & build social capital.
 
The grants, announced to the recipients in July, are the second round awarded under our new strategic plan. The funded activities will help achieve a set of key results, ultimately leading to greater social, economic, and racial equity in our community. All funded activities will lead to measurable outcomes for Minneapolis residents.

Transform Education
High-quality education that enables all young people to learn and thrive is essential to individual well-being and regional prosperity. Our investment in this area focuses on three key results: student success, effective public education, and community and parent engagement. $1,075,000 in grants will support education through a variety of programs whose efforts include increasing parent engagement, improving child care systems and access to child care, and supporting early childhood, youth, and college school-readiness. A Chance To Grow - $35,000
For expansion of its SMART Solutions Program.
For expansion and replication of its model into Olson Middle School in North Minneapolis.
For direct representation, educational programming, and systems change work focusing on youth aging out of foster care, homeless youth, and runaway/unaccompanied youth in Minnesota.

Family Housing Fund - $50,000
For its Infant and Toddler project, focusing on access to quality early childhood care and education for children who experienced homelessness, and are now living in supportive housing in Minneapolis.

Genesys Works - $50,000
For the College-Connection and Career program to serve economically disadvanteged high school students in Minneapolis.

For implementation of the MPS Strategic Plan - the Division of Accountability, Strategy, and Innovation.

Joyce Preschool - $30,000
For its bilingual early childhood and youth school readiness programs.
For its Immigrant Leadership School Program to engage immigrant parents, shape public policy, and improve the education of immigrants and Latino youth in Minneapolis.
For its research, advocacy, policy development, and annual conference.
For its Minneapolis Urban Iniative addressing classroom instruction on science-based sex education and working toward adopting school district-wide policy on adolsecent sexual health.

Patchwork Quilt - $30,000
For its "parents as advocates" project, increasing the engagement of parents and teachers in North Minneapolis.
For its art and technology integrated education model.
For its Minneapolis Gets Ready Initiative for systemic improvement for child care systems in Minneapolis.
For its Arts and Literacy program at Cityview Elementary School in North Minneapolis, for students in grades K-3.
For development and implementation of the Direct Instruction Reading model for all K-3 grades.

Upstream Arts Inc. - $60,000
For dissmenation and integration of its arts-based teaching methods and program models into Special education classrooms in Minneapolis Public Schools.

Way to Grow - $50,000
For its core mission to continue and expand its school readiness programming for at-risk children and their families in Minneapolis.

Wilderness Inquiry - $50,000
For its outdoor education program "Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures" to engage 1,800 underperforming Minneapolis Public School students in grades 6-12, as well as their parents.
Promote Economic Vitality
It is critical to develop pathways to help all Minnesotans move out of poverty and into active participation in our community, which will improve the overall health and vitality of our region. Our investment in this area focuses on three key results: stable families, a prepared workforce, and community wealth. Grant awards totaling $865,000 will work toward assisting economic development in low-income areas, providing housing and services to low-income families, advocating for affordable housing in Minnesota, and supporting job training and employment programs. Click here to learn more about our goals and funding criteria.
For its free asset development and tax preparation assistance to very low income Minneapolis residents to file for income tax credits that help reduce family debt and increase savings.

Aeon - $50,000
For its supportive housing and services in Minnesota.
For its research and advocacy work to maintain effective levels of State investment in public support programs that benefit very low income residents of Minneapolis, and assure implementation of Heading Home Hennepin, which offers recommendations to end homelessness.
For its foreclosure prevention and first time homebuyer programs serving eligible residents of the region, particularly African immigrants living in Minnesota.
For its education and technical assistance to help families of color build assets and improve financial stability.
For its comprehensive investment programs in Minneapolis benefiting low-income communities.
For the Northside Job connection ex-offender program in North Minneapolis.
For its employment readiness services for ex-offenders in Minneapolis.
For its housing preservation activities through the Foreclosure Relief Project in Minneapolis.
For its development of a Social Innovation Center and Green Economy Training Center in Minneapolis.
For its technical assistance and loans for minority and small business owners in Minneapolis.
For its American Indian business development along Franklin Avenue Cultural Corridor in Minneapolis.
For its technical assistance and planning for the Bottineau Corridor in Minneapolis.
For its public policy advocacy to improve affordable housing options across Minnesota.

Summit Academy OIC - $50,000
For its employment and training programs in Minneapolis, and advocacy to increase minority participation in state funded construction projects.
For its efforts to help homeless youth access supportive services, and build skills for independent living and long term self-sufficiency.
For sponsorship of the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project.

Twin Cities RISE - $35,000
For its recruitment, training, and placement of low-income adults into green jobs and industries.
Build Social Capital
The Minneapolis Foundation supports efforts by people affected by community problems to define the challenges and find solutions, and make sure institutions are representative of, and responsive to, the communities they serve. Our investment in this area focuses on three key results: communities speak and act for themselves, responsive organizations, and effective leadership. $955,000 in grants will build social capital by supporting mentoring and youth engagement programs, civic engagement, racial and gender equity, and equality for people with disabilities and minority communities. For Access Press Unbound, a series of topic-specific blogs that would allow members of the disability community to network and share information.
For the planning, design, and implementation of programs to achieve gender equality for refugee and immigrant women.

For its efforts to improve policies and programs for the betterment of all Minnesotans with disabilities.
For its community organizing work to promote racial and economic equity.
For its capacity building program to foster sustainable leadership and increase the capacity of the social justice movement in Minnesota.

Hope Community - $45,000
For its community engagement activities with youth and young adults in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis.

KFAI, Fresh Air - $60,000
For its programming, which connects and serves underserved communities to allow more equitable public discourse.
For its Empowering Parents of Teens program.
For the Beacons Youth Advocacy Project to connect underrepresented youth to advocacy opportunities.
For their services and advocacy to improve the lives of American Indian women and children in Minneapolis.
For the American Indian Community Blueprint in Minneapolis.
For its work to strengthen community organizing and to help community organizations effectively address racial equity.
For Hyphe-NATIONS: Immigrants Matter, a community-based civic engagement project with the Latina/o community along Lake Street and the surrounding neighborhoods of Minneapolis.

For its activites, which promote policy and procedural changes in the courts, and lead to greater safety for victimes of domestic violence and accountability for violent offenders.
