Donors Partner with Foundation on Community Impact Grants

In addition to supporting nonprofits all over the world, many Minneapolis Foundation donors are passionate about making a difference right here in the Twin Cities. Whether you’re interested in education, jobs creation, or voter turnout, the Foundation can help make your giving go further. Our philanthropic advisors can offer advice and resources, providing you with information about local issues and alerting you to special opportunities to help our community.

Some donors go a step further and partner with the Foundation on our Community Impact grantmaking. These competitive grants are awarded to local nonprofits working in three focus areas: education, economic vitality, and civic engagement. The Foundation’s latest round of grants went to 85 local organizations for work in 2015.

By coordinating their grantmaking with the Foundation’s Community Impact initiatives, donors pool and leverage their resources to achieve a much greater impact than they could alone. For example, the North Star Fund—a donor advised fund—worked with Foundation staff last fall to identify and fund several promising grant proposals that focus on workforce development and jobs training. The process included a site visit to one of the nonprofits that the North Star Fund decided to invest in. “It helped us elevate our decision-making in a really positive way,” said Minneapolis attorney Alene G. Sussman, who serves on the fund’s advisory committee.
