Serving the Blind and Visually Impaired

The Gladys M. Smith and Jane McCarthy Funds of The Minneapolis Foundation will award grants to organizations serving Minnesotans who are blind or visually impaired. Grants will support programs that teach independent living skills or provide other educational and recreational opportunities. A maximum of $39,670 will be awarded this fall. Requests for $5,000 to $10,000 will be accepted.


Applicants must be…

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving the blind and visually impaired or public institutions that work with these communities
  • Based in Minnesota, serving Minnesota residents
  • Organizations that serve a diverse and inclusive population, and which have staff members who represent the community served

We will not fund…

  • Requests for religious purposes
  • Capital requests
  • Re-granting/loans


How to Apply

Applications will be accepted starting on Monday, October 7, 2019. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, October 30, 2019. To apply, you must log in to our online application portal. If you have not previously registered yourself and your organization, you will be asked to register to get a username and password.

In the description of how project success will be evaluated and measured, please include specific, quantifiable measures of success. We’ll also ask for a list of key staff and board members and your organizational and project budgets as attachments. If you have previously received a grant from The Minneapolis Foundation, you must submit all required reports by their deadlines to be eligible for future funding. Previous approval or denial is not a decision-making factor for consideration of support.
